Questions on GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Helping answers to Questions concerning GERD

What is GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?

GERD is when small amounts of stomach acid rise up into the esophagus, or the "swallowing" tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. This is why it is also known as acid reflux disease.

The esophagus, unlike the stomach, does not have a protective lining, so when it is exposed to stomach acid, it can become inflamed and painful. In addition, tissue damage, or scarring on the esophagus can narrow the esophagus and make swallowing difficult. Acid reflux can lead to pre-cancerous conditions such as Barrett's Esophagus, cause permanent scarring of the esophagus, or create serious throat and lung conditions, making proper treatment of reflux important to your health.

What are GERD symptoms?

Persistent heartburn and acid regurgitation are the main symptoms of GERD, ( acid reflux disease ). When stomach acid rises and touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. This fluid may even be tasted in the back of the mouth, this is acid indigestion. Occasional heartburn is common but does not necessarily indicate GERD. However, heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD, which may lead to more serious health problems.

Can infants get GERD?

Acid reflux disease, GERD is actually common and often overlooked in infants and children. It can result in repeated vomiting, coughing, and other respiratory problems. Infants and small children's immature digestive systems are usually the reason for the condition and most infants grow out of GERD by the time they are 1 year old.
